Should Australia go nuclear? The no case, by Lindsay Tanner

Brian McInnes 04 July 2005

Well-developed arguments in speech to Parliament pour cold water on magic bullet solutions to greenhouse.

A Speech to Parliament by Tanner on June 20 began with " I have been watching the current debate about a debate regarding nuclear power with some interest. For reasons that are unknown, sections of the Australian media, particularly the newspaper The Australian, have been asking anybody with vague relevance to comment on whether or not we should have a debate."

He went on to present well-developed arguments and concluded by saying "It is important to emphasise that there is no magic bullet, be it nuclear power or smart metering. But it is illustrative of how we can address greenhouse problems by getting a lot smarter about how we do things and using new technology to massively improve our performance of energy use and reduce our consumption by moving forward, rather than by blindly reverting to old solutions that may help solve the greenhouse problem but that bring a lot of other problems with them."
