Biofuels NOT the answer

David Worth d.worth@bigpond.com 31 May 2007

To find out why biofuels are not the answer to the challenges posed by peak oil to Australia's fuel supplies, read this new 'Alternate Fuels' policy paper prepared by the Sustainable Transport Coalition in WA.

The STC has been exploring the implications of peak oil on Australia for the past 5 years, and federal MP Carmen Lawrence launched their 'Oil:Living with Less' policy in 2004. Their approach to what Australia should do about this issue is firstly to reduce fuel usage, as this will also have great climate change benefits as well. Govts should spend far more on public transport, walking and cycling and encouraging the usage of smaller cars, before subsidising farmers to produce alternate fuels.
