The Environmental Protection and Biodiversity (EPBC) Act isn’t working with biodiversity decline continuing at unprecedented rate. Our current laws are almost powerless to defend endangered animals like the koala from habitat loss, and climate change isn’t even mentioned. We need stronger, smarter, simpler laws and institutions that empower us today and prepare us for tomorrow.
Last weekend, LEAN volunteers came together to share strategies and sharpen their skills to lead our campaign for stronger, smarter and simpler environmental laws.
But the 30 people who attended LEAN’s national campaign training can’t visit all 500 branches alone. We need your help! LEAN Capital Region will be running a Campaign Training workshop, and you are invited. Come and learn more about the campaign, and how you can be involved in making this historic reform happen.
Date: Thursday 31st August, 2017
Time: 6pm
Venue: CPSU Training Rooms, Level 2, 40 Brisbane Ave, Barton, ACT
Now is the time to stir the spirit of environmental stewardship that Labor has been known for. It has only been Labor governments that have delivered big reforms. Labor ensured that the Franklin River was saved from damming, that the Daintree, Kakadu and Tasmanian old growth forests are protected, and created the largest network of Marine National Parks in the world. It has only been Labor governments that have delivered for our environment.
It’s time again for another historic reform to be made by a prospective Labor government to protect our heritage. Our party needs to speak clearly to ensure that making our biodiversity laws effective becomes an election promise.
Over the coming months, LEAN will be approaching Labor branches nation-wide to ask for their support and pass motions in support of reforming our environmental laws.
Building momentum based on Labor people is powerful. It saw our party commit to 50 percent renewables by 2050 when Australia’s commitment to reducing our emissions was in doubt.
Reform of the EPBC Act would usher in a new epoch for Australia’s landscapes, flora, fauna and people. Please come and be a part of this moment.
