John Della Bosca has built a career shaped by a deep commitment to progressive, innovative social and environmental policy, with a particular focus on the strategies required to see policy translated into real-world outcomes. Across both professional and personal life, his work has centred on how good policy, effective campaigning and political leadership intersect.
John has held senior leadership roles in progressive organisations, including serving as a Trade Union official, and remains a committed unionist. His political experience includes long-term service on the ALP National Executive and as General Secretary of the NSW Australian Labor Party. He played a leadership role in successive NSW Labor governments and continues to provide strategic and advisory support to the Party at both national and state levels. During his time as a party official, Della Bosca pioneered key elements of what is now known as marginal seat campaigning.
A strong advocate for disadvantaged and marginalised communities, he has contributed to significant policy change, most notably the establishment of Sydney’s Medically Supervised Injecting Centre and his leadership as National Campaign Director for Every Australian Counts. He has served on numerous NGO, government, private and cultural boards, and currently works as a professional consultant in the disability and mental health sectors. He also served as Research Director at the Whitlam Institute at Western Sydney University from 2018 to 2020.
John is a Member of the Order of Australia, a recipient of the Ted Noffs Humanitarian Award, and a winner of the PRIA Golden Target Award for Best Public Affairs Campaign.
