Petition: Support Household Electrification
Electrification is a leading way to reduce household energy costs whilst also addressing climate change and supporting domestic manufacturing. It is a win-win-win policy outcome for Labor!
- Electric appliances are more efficient and cheaper to run: Electrification would save the average VIC household over $1400 per year; and $900 per year in NSW.
- Electrification also presents a significant opportunity to expand domestic manufacturing. Australia already has a strong appliance manufacturing sector, but just ~10% of heat pumps are locally made.
- Burning gas for cooking and heating in the home is also a significant health risk, and a major contributor to childhood asthma.
We urge the Federal Government to:
- Commit to making electrification a policy priority with ambitious new targets and incentives that prioritise vulnerable and difficult to transition households, including social housing and rentals.
- Target full electrification of government and community infrastructure by 2035 (such as schools, hospitals and community centres).
- Support domestic electric appliance manufacturing through government procurement agreements and consumer incentives.
