Dear Premier McGowan
As a Labor member/supporter, I am seeking your support for strong new national environment laws and an ‘independent cop on the beat’ through a new national EPA.
I stand with the 500 ALP local branches across the country, who called on the Party to improve the Federal Environment Laws. Thanks to efforts from loyal party members across the country, the National Platform now commits the Federal Party to reform the environment laws in line with the independent review by Graeme Samuel and to create a Federal EPA. The review showed that our environment is degrading rapidly and that the laws need to be strengthened, not undermined as Scott Morrison is attempting to do.
I am very concerned that you have publicly backed Scott Morrison's attempts to further degrade environmental protection in this country. The position of the WA Government is at odds with the National ALP Platform, 500 local ALP branches and other party entities, the 38 recommendations of the Samuel Review and the position of other ALP State Premiers, including Premier Palaszczuk of resource rich Queensland.
I ask you to stand up for good process and for laws that genuinely protect the unique natural heritage we are so lucky to share. As Labor people, we support sustainable development, but not at any cost. Good environment laws provide certainty for business and manage the risks associated with environmental damage.
